The Peterson Institute held a high-level discussion of the economic policy initiatives of Japan's new government, or Abenomics, on February 15, 2013. This timely event took place just ahead of Prime Minister Abe's upcoming summit meeting with President Obama. The event was organized with the assistance of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
Professor Koichi Hamada of Yale University, the primary architect of the Abe government's economic program, led off the first panel of the conference, followed by PIIE President Adam S. Posen and Stephan Danninger of the International Monetary Fund. Motoshige Itoh of the University of Tokyo led the second panel, followed by former US Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter and PIIE Senior Fellow Jeffrey J. Schott, who discussed Japan's trade policy, including its absence from the current Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. Marcus Noland, PIIE, chaired the first panel, and Daniel Bob of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation chaired the second panel.
